SERMON INFO
Paul calls the Corinthians "Saints" (sanctified, set apart, holy). Compared to what they were before God saved them, they were "Holy" and "spiritual." But compared to what he might have expected them to be after knowing the Lord for several years, Paul calls them "carnal, fleshly, immature, babes."
He rebukes them for behaving like men---that is, behaving like "mere men." They were NOT mere men. They were not just citizens of earth, but citizens of heaven---not just creatures, but new creations---not just those who were generated by natural means, but those who were generated by supernatural means. In this passage, Paul warns the Corinthians against boasting in men, whether Paul or Apollos or any other. And he warns those who build upon the foundation he laid in Corinth to be very careful how they build on it. Those who build with solid materials, like costly stones (such as marble or granite) will see their work last, and they will be rewarded. Those who use perishable materials, like wood and straw, will see their work burned, and they will lose whatever reward they might have received. They will be saved, yet so as by fire---by the skin of their teeth. There are many believers who are teaching error: God's faithful will never be sick and never be poor, all Christians should speak in tongues, salvation can be lost...etc. Such teachers, if they are true believers, will be saved, but with nothing to show for their labors. This message seemed to bless the flock at Liberty.
