This Psalm begins and ends with the plight of the wicked. It contains sober estimates of what awaits them (v12). Then there are great descriptions of the greatness of God's attributes (vv5-6) and especially meditations on His loving-kindness (vv7-8). So we come to the river which is from God and represents spiritual blessings. These can only be received as a gift and not by right. It is a great river with such depths and lengths as well as possessing enriching properties. These show us that the Christian life is not restrictive and cramping. It is a river which is ever flowing. It brings growth and progress so that none who are touched by it remain the same. Furthermore it is a dependable river. If we are ill, worried or even at the point of death this river will not suddenly run out or dry up. Finally it is a river of pleasures. These are not the trivial pleasures of man but things that are pleasing to God. God delights in holiness and righteousness and so this river gives strength to be holy. It also brings joy, peace and love. Everything that the Lord takes pleasure in is to be found by drinking of this river.
