Covetousness is a desire for something that doesn't belong to us or something that we do not have. It is an indication that we are discontent. Christ said that we are to be content with such things as we have. This does not mean that we don't work hard, but we need to guard against allowing work to come between us and the things of God. Where we are informed in the New Testament to covet the best gifts the Greek word means to be zealous for the best gifts. This zealousness should be that we are useful in the service of God.
