Habakkuk is writing during a time when it seems like everything is falling apart. The prophet exclaims to the Lord that things are bad and ask God why He tolerates wrong. God did not shut Habakkuk down, instead He inspired the questions Habakkuk had. Today we can look around and see that our world has wickedness everyday and wonder why God isn’t doing something. The prophet Habakkuk asked God and God’s answer was that He was raising up the Babylonians to punish the wickedness of the people. Our security is not in the things around us, our security is in the Lord. The Lord is in control and even though He used the Babylonians to bring judgement on His people, He will end up punishing the Babylonians as well. Habakkuk, in chapter 3, prays that the Lord will have mercy in the midst of judgement on His people. When God shows up, He is magnificent. The circumstances, however, are ugly. God will often display His glory by putting His people in situations where He is holy and His people have no where else to turn but to Him. If we are in a position where we know that our only hope is the Lord, we are in a good position. God alone is righteous, He alone will save.
