After the National Covenant was voted on and accepted, Scotland became a covenantal nation. They hated everything that was contrary to the Word of God in the Civil and Church realms. In 1640, Charles I wanted to go to war against Scotland. He petitioned Parliament for funding the campaign against Scotland. Parliament, being reformed by Christ, vetoed the king's request. Charles then petitioned the Episcopal and the catholic church. They gave Charles the funds to go to war against Scotland, but as Charles marched to the border, he met 30,000 Scots waiting to defend their faith. These actions and many others led up to Charles being beheaded and the assembling of the Westminster Divines.
