We continue now in one of the most startling passages in the entire Bible. I am referring to Isaiah’s fourth and final “Servant Song,” the familiar text that we simply call “Isaiah 53.” In this sermon I will open up the third stanza of the song, which is really the heart of the matter. It reveals the nature of the atoning sacrifice of the Servant of the Lord, which is one of the most important issues of the Christian faith. From what this text teaches, and from the general revelation of Scripture, we conclude that the Servant accomplished a substitutionary penal atonement. In other words, He willingly substituted Himself in the place of guilty sinners, and He bore the punishment that they justly deserved. That is the reason why that those for whom He substituted Himself MUST be saved, and WILL be saved. It simply cannot be otherwise since He paid their debit in full. And that is what makes the Servant of the Lord a faithful Savior! This is the theme that I develop in this sermon, from this ancient text from the prophet Isaiah. May the Lord God be pleased to bless His word to our hearts as we come to the Lord’s Supper together!
