Abraham was anxious, before he would die, that he would see his son Isaac married. With this purpose in mind, he sent a trusted servant (Eliezar) to the home country of Mesopotamia to bring back the bride!
Though a tremendous, daunting task, this enterprise was successfully performed ... as a result of the gracious guidance of God!
Eliezer acknowledges God’s leading in Genesis 24:27: “Blessed be the Lord God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of His mercy and His truth: I being in the way, the Lord led me to the house of my master’s brethren.”
These words remind us that, if we are to be led by the Lord, we have a responsibility to fulfil: we must first ensure that we are "in the way," then more precise guidance will be granted.
1. The Way of DUTY ... Eliezar accepted a commission from Abraham - and did all he possibly could to fulfil that commission.
2. The Way of DESIRE ... Genesis 24:11-14 reveal how Eliezar engaged in specific, simple and earnest prayer for guidance.
3. The Way of DEPENDENCE ... Eliezar was distinguished by a sincere belief in God - and, when successful in his quest, was careful to return thanks to the Lord for help (v27).
To pray for grace to follow God's guidance is wisdom indeed!
Lord, I would play my hand in Thine, Nor ever murmur nor repine; Content, whatever lot I see, Since 'tis my God that leadeth me.
