That Jesus, the incarnate Word, Lord over all, should take off his outer clothing, wrap a towel around his waist and wash his disciples' feet like a menial slave is hard to comprehend. That this act not only modelled what it means for us to humbly serve one another but also symbolized and anticipated the shocking act of the cross by which Jesus would wash us clean is no less astonishing. Like Peter, we may feel this is all so unnecessary and too humiliating. What relief though, to let Jesus do what is needed - cleansing us from our foolish pride so that we might be freed to serve one another in the greatness of His love and humility.
