Offering Spiritual Sacrifices (1 Pet 2:4-6) Introduction The power, and vitality, and purity of worship is therefore a matter of life and death to the church of Jesus Christ. For if we lose the life and vigor of our worship, we will soon seek innovations to fill the aching void of reality.
Exposition: The priesthood of the believer What is the service of the priesthood when we come together as a church? Ex 25:22, Eph 2:19-22, this is where we meet in the presence of God for worship (compare Mt 28:20, Ps 139:8 vs 1Cor 14:25 etc.). We are the temple (1Cor 13:16, 1Tim 3:15, etc).
And we are also the priesthood of that temple!
What spiritual sacrifices are we supposed to be offering?
1. We are to bring the sacrifices of broken and contrite hearts (Ps 51:17, Lk 18:11-14) How are we going to get that?
2. We are to bring the sacrifices of praise from thankful hearts (Heb 13:15, Jer 33:11) Compare Lev 7:12, Is 57:19, Hos 14:2, Ps 107:22. We are to 'bring these sacrifices into the house of the Lord.'
3. We are to bring the gifts and offerings of generous hearts (2Cor 8:12, Phil 4:18)
4. We are to offer up the sacrifice of prayers and supplications from holy hearts (Heb 5:6-7, Rev 5:8).
Application: None shall appear before me empty-handed (Deut 16:16)
