SERMON INFO
Seeking Truth and Proclaiming Hope. Acts 17:10-34In Acts 17:10-34, we witness a significant chapter in the early propagation of Christianity, as the apostle Paul navigates his way through Thessalonica, Berea, and Athens, encountering diverse audiences including Jews, Gentiles, philosophers, and intellectuals. This passage illuminates Paul's strategic evangelistic approach, his profound theological acumen, and his adeptness in engaging with varying cultural and religious contexts.Upon reaching Berea in Acts 17:10-15, Paul and Silas persist in preaching the gospel despite earlier opposition in Thessalonica. The Bereans are commended for their eagerness in receiving the word and diligently examining the Scriptures daily to verify Paul's teachings. However, trouble brews as Jews from Thessalonica incite the crowds against Paul, leading to his departure from Berea while Silas and Timothy stay behind. This underscores the reality of persecution faced by early Christians and the necessity for resilience in adversity. In Acts 17:16-21, Paul arrives in Athens, a hub of philosophical and intellectual activity. Distressed by the rampant idolatry, he engages in discourse with Jews and Greeks in the synagogue and the marketplace, encountering Epicurean and Stoic philosophers.Paul's interaction with Athenian philosophers in Acts 17:22-31 showcases his skill in contextualized evangelism. Acknowledging the Athenians' religious inclinations, he seizes upon their altar to an "unknown god" to bridge the gap between their beliefs and the gospel. From there, he proclaims the sovereignty of the Creator God over all nations, critiquing idolatry and calling for repentance.
