Noah found "grace" (Hebrew (חֵן)) in the eyes of the Lord! "Grace" what is grace: 1 First, Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. Grace is in the eyes of the giver. That is, grace exists entirely in the heart of the giver. 2 Second, Noah found grace. That is, grace is found, it is not earned. Grace is not deserved or motivated in any way by the receiver. 3 Third, Grace is only given to one in great need. No need, no grace. Noah had to find grace, there was a flood coming. 4 Fourth, Grace is only given to one who cannot help themselves. If they can rescue themselves, then there is no grace. Noah was pretty small against a global flood. 5 Fifth, grace gives a gift. The grace of Christ - gives the gift of salvation from sin. The grace of God to Noah - gave the gift of salvation from death in the flood.
The most important verse in this passage is:
Gen 8:21 "I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intention of man's heart is evil from his youth."
How can this be? God brought the flood because:The LORD saw that every intention of the thoughts of man's heart was only evil continually.
But here God says, "I will never again curse the ground because the intention of man's heart is evil from his youth.
The answer lies in the gospel. God must preserve man on the earth so that He can eventually bring redemption through Jesus. This is why the Noahic Covenant is called the covenant of preservation. Because man is wicked and God does purpose to save a people for Himself.
Thus the rainbow promises. seedtime and harvest, summer and winter, day and night will continue that the Messiah might save a people to be God's special possession.
