Loving God is a commandment—it is the law of love. With our fallen nature, we are no more capable of keeping that command, in our own strength, than we are of any other command in the law.
In sharp contrast to the law, which condemns us from within, comes the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which is an external announcement—and a very surprising one at that. God’s decision to rescue us from the judgment of the law, through the perfect work of Christ, runs contrary to our common understanding.
