Bildad's first speech had focused on the question, “Does God pervert justice?” Bildad had reminded Job of the wisdom of the ages: that the hope of the godless will perish; but that God would not reject a blameless man.
When we looked at Bildad's first speech we saw that Job quickly recognized that if Bildad is right, then he has no hope, because if Bildad is right, and only the wicked suffer, then the cross cannot happen.
If Jesus – the suffering servant of the LORD – was not crucified for our sins, and raised up from the dead for our justification, then we are still perishing in our sins.
But Bildad is not convinced by Job's replies. Now, in chapter 18, Bildad heightens his rhetorical attack on Job. In his first speech, Bildad had offered Job a way out: if you are righteous, then God will still reward you.
Now, Bildad is getting fed up with Job. He spends only three verses trying to answer Job, before launching into his warning of what Job, he fears, is becoming... |
