No farmer plants a seed in the ground expecting to get one more seed in return. A seed is planted with the expectation of exponential return in multiplied growth. We often make the focus of the death of Christ in this text as that which “bringeth forth much fruit.” This is part of the focus. However, Christ is stating a universal principle of plant biology. Seed is produced when a plant dies providing opportunity for life/germination to be multiplied on an expansive scale. Then, when all the plants die and the multiplied seeds from those plants are planted, each succeeding generation then multiplies itself exponentially. Verses 25 and 26 of John 12 are the emphasis of the text. To follow Christ is to follow Him in death to self and the spiritual fruit of souls won to Christ and who are then discipled become the production of multiplied seed for another generation.
