When Jesus Christ referred to Himself the image as “bread,” there could be little doubt that He was portraying. What is it that is important about bread? First bread is necessary for life – this was even more true in Christ's day, where it was not only necessary, but in many cases sufficient. Second bread is suitable for everyone – there is no one who cannot eat bread, so there is no one to whom the gospel should not be preached. Third it should be eaten daily. In the Lord's prayer, we are instructed to ask God for our, “daily bread.” Fourth bread produces growth. One reason for the weak, anemic, church today is the famine that exists for the Word of God.
Jesus said, “I am the bread of life.” In this statement, Christ tells us that He is the all sufficient One, necessary for the eternal life of whomever will receive Him. The One in whom we must feed upon daily – the One who alone causes sanctification and growth in our lives.
