In this text we see the ratification of God's covenant with national Israel at the foot of Mount Sanai. Both the terms and the binding nature of the covenant oath are set forth clearly in this text. The Mosaic Covenant was a bond-in-blood oath that obligated God's people to obey the entirety of the Mosaic Law upon pain of death. Yet as we consider that solemn obligation, it points us to the only One who has ever lived who perfectly fulfilled those obligations, but nevertheless had His blood shed on behalf of the lawlessness of many others. We, like the children of Israel of old, have broken God's holy Law. God's holiness and justice cry out for our blood. Nevertheless, in the stead of God's chosen people, Jesus Christ has interposed His own precious blood. The blood of the New Covenant speaks better things than the blood of the Mosaic Covenant.
