Throughout, the gospel of Mark we have been gaining a glimpse of Jesus, the Servant of the Lord. Jesus has been actively teaching and training the 12 and preparing them for the day that they would be launched out into the world. The disciples did not fully understand the concept of a Suffering Servant. Their thinking was more in line with a Divine Warrior King to overthrow Rome in physical power. Jesus came with spiritual power and was turning the world upside down by healing hearts with His Word, delivering those under demonic oppression, and recovering the sick from their physical ailments or disabilities. Jesus was healing the brokenness of humanity which sin has brought into the world. In the previous passage, Jesus has instructed His disciples concerning His upcoming death in Jerusalem, explained the path to greatness through service, and reminded the disciples that the smallest deeds done to the least or insignificant would not go unnoticed. Therefore, humility should mark every disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ. Now, Jesus will issue a grave warning for offenses. The way we live our lives before others have a profound effect, and the disciple should love God and others to the point of not wanting to be a stumbling block to any child or young believer. The disciple should have a holy hatred for sin. Sin can be defined “as an attack on God’s glory, name, and nature. All sin is a result of lust and is an attempt to assault God’s love.” Sin must be dealt with severely. If not, it will take you under. The title of this message will be the Seriousness of Sin.
