An unnamed woman, a Gentile, who was also a Greek came to Him, prostrated herself before Him and begged Him to exorcise her demonically possessed daughter who remained at their home. The Gentiles had not always treated the Jews kindly and dominated them since the Assyrian invasion of the north in 722 B.C. and the final Babylonian invasion of the south in 586 B.C.
This scene also provides some insight in the relationship of the Jewish men to their women at that time. Men dominated women then and not always in a respectable manner. Also a rabbi was not supposed to have and direct contact with a woman and her nationality of Gentile Syrophoenicia further provided an inherent distancing between her and Jesus. She was demonstrating a strong faith and desperately needed to have her daughter relieved of demonic oppression. She therefore in her desperation and belief that Jesus could heal her daughter she decided cross all these barriers and beg Jesus to heal her.
