Jesus left Capernaum along with His disciples and travelled about twenty miles to Nazareth. The scene Mark portrays for his readers is one in which the teacher leads a group of students on a public mission. Even though Jesus was born in Bethlehem he was raised in Nazareth. He had spoken in the Nazareth synagogue on the Sabbath before (Luke 4:14-30). In the Luke incident he walked away from the Jews who tried to kill Him. Jesus was again invited to teach in the local synagogue. As we have seen the synagogues outside of Jerusalem were led by prominent members of the community such as Jairus. Jesus being a well-known and popular speaker had no difficulties in gaining a forum in the synagogue on the Sabbath. As usual during His teaching many were astonished at what He said. They could not understand the high degree wisdom he had and they could not explain the miracles He was performing in their midst. His detractors did not express a wholesome amazement at the teaching and the miracles. Their questions that came out regarding His actions were disparaging at best and hostile at worst. They expressed the idea that there were only two sources of His actions God or Satan (Mark 3:22).
