The text was taken from Romans 4:1-12. In the Apostle Paul section in Romans dealing with justification. First he speaks of imputed Righteousness by faith alone.
Blessed is the man to whom the LORD imputes righteousness by faith, but also bless is the man to the LORD will not impute sin. Romans 4:1-8.
Justification is apart from Law, by faith in Christ and Christ alone. Then in Romans 4:9-12; the Apostle Paul shows the factual case here that Abraham the father of all those in the faith was justified outside of the circumcision.
In fact Abraham was called at age 75, imputed righteousness at 85. Ishmael is born when Abraham was 86. Name changed by God from Abram to Abraham at the age of 99. The also circumcised at the age of 99. All this was done 600 plus years before the giving of the Law.
In fact 14 years before the circumcision Abraham is imputed righteousness by faith.
'For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness'. (Romans 4:3 - Paul is quoting Genesis 15:6).
