Colossians is a letter written by the Apostle Paul to this church plant in the city of Colossae. The church consists primarily of new believers, gentile converts. They have been learning and growing in the faith. Epaphras one of Paul's disciples has been the primary leader of this church. But the church is now coming under attack. The weight of the culture is against them. So, Paul writes this letter to them. His heart is aching for their wellbeing. And so the place Paul begins the content of his letter, is with Jesus Christ. The very first adjective to describe Jesus in this letter is "Beloved." So why should we love Jesus? This is what Paul is laying out for us. Why is Jesus the Beloved son? Because of who he is and what He has done. What we love, we serve. What we love most, we serve most. So the greatest source of danger to the Colossian church was not the cultural pressures to capitulate and compromise. No, the great threat of danger to the Colossian church is that their love for Christ would wane and their love for the world and the things of this world would increase. It is not uncommon for people to have dramatic conversion experiences to Christ. Do you know how long that passion lasts? 6 months - 18 months. Then there is a waning of affection.
