There are two great facts about the progress of Christ's church - 1) progress and opposition are not mutually exclusive, they often go hand in hand, 2) in the fluctuating fortunes of the church our wisdom is to look at what is unseen and permanent. After Pentecost the church advanced rapidly - apathy was overcome, numbers increased, the gospel overflowed from the confines of the Jewish nation, and all in fulfilment of God's promises. The happenings of Acts 4 took place in that context. Opposition came from the same people who had crucified Jesus. But there was evidence of Satanic attack in that it coincided with complaints and hypocrisy including the deception practised by Ananias and Sapphira. The church's response has lessons for us. They responded to sin by church discipline, and to complaints by better organisation, but it was all in the power of the Spirit as their conduct while on trial shows. Their enemies' intimidation was met by godly resolve. Then they resorted to the fellowship - happy are those Christians who have a church where people speak to one another about spiritual concerns! The church immediately gathered to pray - it was their spiritual instinct. And their prayer was not for safety (though they may have prayed for that as well) - it was for boldness in proclaiming the gospel that had occasioned their danger. The prayer is instructive for us. It began with a focus on God who is Sovereign Maker of all; then it referred to the opposition they faced, but they described it as opposition to Christ and to him. We do well to see ourselves in context, and the opposition we face we can bring to God as something that affects him more than it affects us.
