The crucifixion of the Lord Jesus was a malignant evil and barbarous act by wicked men, and yet the Savior was determined not to evade it.
In spite of the detestable nature of it, Jesus knew the glorious consequences of His death on the cross, and therefore He was obedient unto death.
Jesus told Nicodemus that He must be lifted up as a sacrifice like Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so that whoever trusted in Him would be saved.
During Jesus' disputation with the scoffers of His day as to whether God had sent Him, Christ informed the people that when they had killed Him on the cross, then it would be plain that He did not His own will, but the Father's that sent Him. Christ being willingly crucified was the proof that God had sent Him and that He obeyed the Father in all things.
And yet, they thought that Christ's death meant He had been rejected by God, and they mocked Him as He hung in shame at Calvary.
Near the end of Him ministry, Jesus stated that when He was hung upon the cross, His crucifixion would be what drew every man to Him. The people knew immediately that this meant that He would die.
They thought that this crime that would be committed against Jesus would exclude Him from being Messiah. But this is exactly what Isaiah had predicted, that nobody would credit the suffering Savior as acceptable to God and as His Holy Anointed One.
The crucifixion is the great dividing line of all the people of the world: either you believe it proves Jesus was rejected by God and a failure, or you know that it is the means by which Christ saved a world.
Nobody comes to Jesus unless they come because He was crucified for them!
