May is the season when the basics of grade school come to an end for many in graduation. As Christians we also grow up and are tempted by our growth in grace and knowledge to think we have graduated from the most basic truth of the gospel, justification by faith. Whenever a church fails to teach this foundational doctrine a gospel of works is never far behind. In Philippians 3.7-11 the apostle Paul reminds us of the danger of considering anything but Christ as profitable for a right relationship to God. The cost of discipleship and your assurance of salvation in the resurrection from the dead is wholly dependent on counting all things loss for the sake of knowing Christ.Â
