John's Gospel includes a focus on eight of Jesus' miracles (eight of an uncounted number of Jesus' signs). John 4:43-54 unpacks major miracle two – a long-distance healing for a gentile official in the administration of Herod Antipas. The healing allows us to explore the nature of faith. John wants every reader to be gain eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. But what kind of faith is saving faith? Will just any old flavor of faith do?
We'll unpack four insights into faith, and why not all faith is saving faith.
1. Introduction: "Surprising and superficial" faith (vv.43-45) The Samaritans honored Jesus, but the Galileans didn't.
2. "Signs and wonder" faith (vv.46-47): A desperate official comes looking for a miracle.
3. "Satisfied but short-sighted" faith (vv.48-50): The hopeful man leaves with a divine promise. (His faith improved, but not complete.)
4. "Saving and fruitful" faith (vv.51-54): Jesus' promise is confirmed, the boy is healed, and the father is saved.
