The prevailing view of the ancient Greeks was that the soul could not really be free until it was liberated from the body and reabsorbed into deity. Therefore, the idea of resurrecting the body was not only ludicrous to the Greek, it was abhorrent. So as the apostles proclaimed the resurrection to those who had embraced Greek philosophy, they were mocked, and in Paul's absence from the church of Corinth which God had established through him, some had begun to say that there was NO resurrection of the dead. In this glorious chapter, Paul responds to this false teaching with a powerful defense of the resurrection. This message emphasizes that the resurrection of Christ is the cornerstone of our faith, and the apostles do not ask us to believe it despite the evidence, they assert that they were eyewitnesses of the risen Lord. After the tragic suicide of the members of the Heaven's Gate Cult in March of 1997---men and women who had been deceived into thinking that killing themselves was the way to board a spacecraft that had come to take them away, Edward Tabash of the Council for Secular Humanism reportedly said: "Conventional religions are just as superstitious. 'Spaceship Salvation,'is no different from salvation through some invisible unproven God." Paul's point in 1 Corinthians 15 is that God, in Christ, was not "invisible and unproven." He was VISIBLE and PROVEN, "declared to be the Son of God with power, by the resurrection from the dead."
