In contrast to what Paul wrote in 1 Corin. 11:2 regarding head coverings, here Paul does not praise them but tells them they are coming together for the worse. We explain what caused him to make this strong rebuke. They had schisms not caused by doctrine, but by social distinctions. The elite people of high status were hosting their fellowship meal and giving special honor to their key friends while shaming many others.
This will cause judgment as Paul warns that some are not "approved." Ironically those who thought they were special and approved by God are in fact the ones in danger of judgment. They lived in an honor/shame culture and to shame individuals who were adopted by God into His family and given eternal promises was unacceptable.
Paul thus will not praise them for this. We explain this honor/shame social world by using applications from Luke where Jesus rebuked those picking out places of honor.
