The Jerusalem Council serves as the critical hinge in the book of Acts. Coming at the centerpoint of Luke's account, it was the turning point for the Church. What Pentecost was to the Church's origination and definition, the Jerusalem Council was to its authentic continuance. With increasing numbers of Gentile converts, the Church was becoming composite as well as cosmopolitan, and the Gentile presence in the Church provoked a concern that had now reached critical mass. That concern was that people were entering God's covenant community without possessing the historical signs of covenant identity, namely circumcision and adherence to the Law of Moses. Left unaddressed, this issue would tear Christ's Church apart. Worse yet, because it reflected a fundamental misjudgment concerning Christ's fulfillment, it threatened the Church's self-understanding and witness in the world. If Christ's Church were to go forward, flourish, and fulfill its calling, the Gentile matter would have to be resolved fully and conclusively.
