Finishing the heart of the letter to the Colossians, Paul continues to address false teaching threatening the Colossians. In 2:20-23, he addresses asceticism--the false idea that self-imposed physical denial can somehow make one more spiritual. Paul warns the brethren of the danger of being voluntarily enslaved again to the rules and regulations of the world, rather than knowing the freedom that comes through Christ.
The natural man is dead in his sins, and he must die to self and die with Christ. But, when then united to Christ, he is now dead to sin, dead to the Law, and dead to the world--they no longer have hold on him. What glorious freedom it is to be enslaved to Christ!
