There is an important principle that the Apostle Paul makes clear and which he applied in his ministry and which we should apply as well: I have become all things to all men (but he doesn’t stop there) that I might by all means save some (1 Corinthians 9:22). What does it mean to become all things to all men? How far should we go and what boundaries should we draw in becoming all things to all men?
Dear ones, this principle will be abused and misused by Christians if it is not properly defined. On the one hand, it will be abused to support lawlessness in freely disregarding obedience to God’s holy law in order to be like all those around us. On the other hand, it will be abused to support legalism in conforming to mere manmade standards for worship and sanctification in order to bring others to the truth. We shall consider these abuses in the sermon today, but we especially want to articulate the right use of this biblical principle in our various circumstances of life.
The Apostle Paul applied this principle of becoming all things to all men in order to save some in our text this Lord’s Day. The main points from our text are in the form of two questions: (1) When Is It Right to Become All Things to All Men (Acts 16:1-3)? (2) How Does the Holy Spirit Direct His People (Acts 16:4-10)?
