God has chosen people for a relationship with himself. Some suggest that the phrase "in him" means that God chose to elect those whom he foresaw would have faith in Christ. Not only does this view add a thought that is not in the text, but elsewhere Paul taught that the very state of being "in Christ" is something to which one is chosen (1 Cor. 1:26-31). Moreover, Paul explicitly stated that the ground of God's predestinating love resides in his own purpose (verses 5, 9).
