After Paul returned to Ephesus following his confrontation in Corinth, he wrote the ‘severe letter' now lost.
He could not wait in Ephesus for return word from Titus to see how the Corinthians were going to respond to his rebuke, so he set out to meet him on the road.
Paul stopped in Troas, a city across the Aegean Sea and to the north of Corinth, where he had hoped to meet up with Titus to get a report from him.
Troas was located about 10 miles from the ancient city of Troy in what is now northwest Turkey.
Troas was founded in 300 B.C. by Emperor Augustus who granted it the high status as a Roman colony, like Corinth and Philippi.
When Paul writes in v14 of “God, who always leads us in His triumph in Christ,” he has the Roman “Triumph” in mind.
Jesus is our Triumphator. He is our Conqueror.
Jesus promised to build His Church against which the forces of hell itself would not prevail over (Mt. 16:18).
I Jn 3:8, …The Son of God appeared for this purpose, that He might destroy the works of the devil.
His resounding victory was comprehensive and complete having crushed the forces of death and hell. 2 Tim 1:10, but now has been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death, and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,
“He swallowed up death for all time…” (Isa. 25:8).
At the occasion of His death on the cross and resurrection from the dead, Triumphant Jesus proclaimed victory over Satan and his demons:
Col 2:15, "When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him." together with Him, we "overwhelmingly conquer" (Ro. 8:37).
