Although God restored His people to the land of Canaan in Ezra and Nehemiah, their sin followed them into the New Testament. The curse of the Mosaic covenant was not yet complete. In His teaching on the wicked vine-dressers, our Lord gave a clear and vivid picture of God's relationship to national Israel at the coming of the Messiah. In this text we see three major things:
1. A Rejected Son 2. A Rejected and Exalted Stone 3. A Rejected and Replaced Nation
Jesus Christ is indeed the Chief Cornerstone that the builders rejected but that God has highly exalted. The standard thrown out by men has become the standard by which all men shall be judged. And God has given the covenant blessings of Israel to a nation bearing the fruits of it: His holy nation, the Church.
