As in the example of Peter, he appoints those in whom God has shattered every confidence in their own ability, so that the faith of the flock rests on the Shepherd himself, rather than on his servants. Like Peter, they need to learn to live and lead in humility, so that the flock may come to find their rest in God alone, by trusting him alone.
