WHY DOES GOD WANT YOU TO FEAR HIM MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE? I. Because it is God's due. Because of who God is in His scintillating holiness, in his inimitable majesty, in his august splendor — he is to be revered, feared — it is His rightful due. II. Because God redeemed you to fear Him alone. One of our deepest defects as human being in rebelling against God is not to fear Him. Man has deluded himself into thinking God to be like him. "If I were God, I wouldn't…" Man has no problem raising all kinds of questions against God as if He were to be held accountable to His own creation: God, why did you… how could God… Such a God shouldn't… Ps. 86:11, "Teach me your way, O LORD, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name." III. Because God knows it is for your own good and welfare. Your heart united to fear the Lord puts everything in their place, it orders your life. IF YOU FEAR OTHER THINGS MORE THAN YOU FEAR GOD… You can (and will eventually) sin against God.
Conclusion Only in and through Christ will that fear of God be saturated with joy, hope, comfort, and confidence. Without Christ, genuine fear of God will cripple sinners. Fearing God is proper but without Christ, you can have no hope.
