Sometimes we are forced to make a choice. It may affect our witness to Christ, and it may come without warning. That was what happened to the Twelve when many abandoned Jesus and he asked them 'Will you also go away?' There was social pressure to follow the majority - a familiar matter. What was the deciding factor? For the majority it was the teaching of Jesus, especially when he spoke of giving his flesh for the life of the world. People do not like the cross, and they do not want to believe they need eternal life at such a cost. They were content with earthly things ('you ate the loaves') and were not prepared to submit to Jesus. For the Twelve the sayings of Jesus had an opposite effect. They wanted eternal life and believed that he alone could provide it. Ultimately our choice is about a Person rather than a tradition or an ethical code. Jesus commands affection and loyalty for he is our God and our Redeemer.
