Paul completes the long and elaborate bad news section of his letter to the church in Rome and the message so far is very sobering. As the section began back in chapter one and verse eighteen with this, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness” and then ever since chapter one verse eighteen up to the close of this morning’s text, Paul has been writing and applying this idea of God’s wrath. His judgment. And the conclusion to these things is clear. All are under the wrath of God. The Greek, yes, but also the Jew, the reckless reprobate and the seemingly religious; every man is under the judgment of God; every man. So Paul lays the bad news on everyman’s doorstep; these three things: 1. Everyman’s condition. Who is better? Who is worse? We are all in the same sad state... 2. Everyman’s lament. Paul goes to the Psalter to indict the sinner! 3. Everyman’s accuser. The Law is a warning, not a remedy, not a roadmap.
