Back in 1981 Rabbi Harold Kushner wrote a famously best-selling book 'When Bad Things Happen to Good People'
While the book was popular, it suffered from a number of serious problems from a biblical point of view.
* It assumed people were good * It assumed that we deserve good things to happen to us * It also wrongly assumed that hardships were never good for us
And finally Kushner came to the terribly conclusion that bad things happen not because God ordained them, but rather that although he did not want them to happen to us, He could not have kept them from happening!
One would expect better from a Rabbi, considering the number of times the Old Testament shows us that Our almighty God uses hardship and tribulation to test, and teach, his people and to cause them to trust Him when they otherwise wouldn't.
It is in our times of tribulation that we learn that a GOOD GOD uses all things for the good of his people, and that we should not depend upon material things, but rather depend upon the God who has made all things.
