J.I. Packer has argued that though the Canons of Dort have five heads of doctrine they really make a single point: "God saves sinners…sinners do not save themselves in any sense at all…salvation, first and last, whole and entire, past, present and future, is of the Lord, to whom be glory for ever; amen!" The good news is not that people partner with God to work out salvation, but that the triune God completely saves spiritually dead sinners.
But this fact does not encourage inactivity. "The Canons' emphasis on the sovereign initiative and effective working of the triune God in the salvation of sinners" does not diminish "human responsibility."
Rounding out the theme of God's irresistible grace the Canons stress the use of the means of grace. To "escape the wrath and curse of God…he requireth…the diligent use of the outward means whereby Christ communicates to us the benefits of his mediation (Prov. 2:1–5; 8:33–36)." If we desire spiritual life we must honor his revealed means of granting that life.
