Looking Forward to the Cross Contrary to common teachings of our day, those living prior to the cross could not have been looking forward to the cross. just because a doctrine becomes prevalent does not make it any more scriptural than a lesser known teaching. Every man must choose for himself whom he will seek to please (Galatians 1:10).
There are many ways to prove that no one looked forward to the cross prior to the cross. In order to further validate these claims, consider the object of Simon Peter's faith. more light (and more pieces of the puzzle) than the Old Testament saints. • sat at the feet of Jesus for over three years as Christ taught. • one of the leaders of the disciples. • Heard about the death, burial, and resurrection prior to the cross … or did he? • Consider these contentious problem areas for those who teach Peter and the others were looking forward to the cross. 1. Peter rebuked the Lord when Christ foretold His death, burial, and resurrection. Mark 8:31
If Peter understood the efficacy of the cross, shouldn't he have believed that this was the only means of redemption? He understood no such thing! 2. Peter fought to stop the soldiers from taking Jesus as prisoner, which would ultimately lead to Jesus dying on the cross for our sins. (John 18:10) Why would Peter fight to stop the crucifixion if he truly understood its significance? He understood no such thing! 3. After the women testified to him what they had seen at the sepulcher, Peter thought that the resurrection account was "idle tales." (Luke 24:11)
