Evidently, fellowship is particular to Christendom, and must be lavished upon by Christians. Since, God desire to have fellowship with His own blood bought Children –v3, fellowship must be pursued. Fellowship is cardinal to Christians, because its primary foundation is both Christocentric (vv1 – 3), and Theocentric. Fellowship is not to be associated with social relations that have no spiritual relevance or significance. So; in order for the meaningful fellowship to occur, and it's objective end attained, that is –"the completing of Christian joy" – v4; four (4) disciplines must be employed. Namely: (1) Recognizing our sins, that we have sinned, so as to not deceive ourselves (v8) and not to make God a liar – v10. (2) Relating to our sins by Confessing of and repenting from our sins – v9. (3) Revealing our sins – v7, by running into the light (c.f. John. 3v19 – 20; Prov. 28v13) – so that His blood would cleanse from all sin. Lastly (4) Resting in the Lord – v9b, because He is faithful and just to – forgive and cleanse. And; in this the Lord is glorified and our fellowship with Him and one another, become refreshingly enriched.
