In Revelation 6:9-17, We are shown two vivid pictures. These pictures show us; first, the hatred of the world toward the church through the eyes of the martyrs under the altar (v9-11) and second; God shutting down their persecutions in the final judgement where all classes of unbelievers want to die instead of face God (v12-17). We have already encountered the first four seals, showing a panorama of world history illustrated by the four horsemen. Now we turn to the fifth and the beginning of the sixth seal. There are two phrases that capture the meaning of this section. "How long, O Lord, holy and true," (v10) and "for the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand" (6:17)
