): In the previous two lectures we looked at a couples shared vows to God. In making them they vow as a couple, “We”. In this lecture we look at a couples mutual vows to God. Vows they make to God as an individual. Vows in which they say “I”. These vows should precede marriage and transcend marriage. They are what could be called, “The vows of discipleship”. Christ as Savior; Christ as Lord; Obedience in Action; To be a man or woman of the Word; to be a man or woman of prayer; to be committed to the fellowship of a local church; to be a committed witness for Christ. Too many times in the pre-marital counseling the emphasis is on the psychology of communication, the knowledge of God's expectations, the social dynamics of family and other important though not bedrock issues. Instead the session should begin like this. “Tell me about your daily devotional life”; “Share with me something you have recently learned in Bible study”; “Share with me a recent experience you have had in personal evangelism”; ‘What do you find most fulfilling in your responsibilities at church”? The reality is that most young couples are destined for marriage failure as joined as one because they are already destined for spiritual failure due to the lack of personal practice of the most basic spiritual disciplines and commitments to Christ. The same is true in marriage counseling. Most pastors will jump right into problem solving, right into communication
