Son of the Devil! The words of Paul stand out from the page, he says "You son of the devil, you enemy of righteousness, villain and deceiver, when will you stop making crooked the path to God?"
Is there ever a time when we should speak like this, or was this just a one time Paul thing?
A closer look at the New Testament, however, reveals that this isn't just a 'one-off' moment. At least twice Jesus makes reference to the fact that there are 'sons of the devil' who want to be accepted as members of God's holy people; one of those times he calls them out with words no less confrontational than the ones that Paul uses when speaking to Elymas Bar-Jesus in Paphos.
Furthermore, the apostle John gives us a way of identifying who in the church are the children of God and who are the children of the devil.
In this sermon we ask two questions. First, who are the children of the devil and how are they recognized; and second, how do we respond to those that fit the description. (The answer to the second question involves identifying what role or position they are holding in a church.)
