In Job 32-33 Elihu begins his speech by justifying its need. 1) There are reasons I must speak: All of your arguments failed; I waited for the wisdom that should have come from age; but wisdom comes from God, so it is not always present with age; the Spirit of God compels me to speak; and like you, Job, I am created by God, and my words prove my uprightness, so do not fear my counsel. 2) There are corrections I must make. You have misjudged your situation: You are not pure and clean; God is not your enemy; and God has not been silent. You have misjudged God's response: He graciously speaks to you in your dreams to discipline you to repentance so that your sould can be spared from the pit; and He graciously speaks to you in your suffering to discipline you to repentance so that your soul can be spared from the pit. Job's three friends have said, 'You are suffering because you sin.' Elihu says, 'You are sinning in the way you suffer.'
