How our hearts burn within us when separated from our children. How difficult and agonizing for parents to have a child rebel and leave the comforts and love of a Christian home. How those Christian parents will continually call upon the Lord to work in the life of that child to return home, but most importantly to return to the God whose gracious promise has been placed upon that child in baptism and in hearing the gospel taught at home and preached from the pulpit. As an encouragement to you, Christian parents: don't give up. Don't let the passing of time quench your hope, your love, and your faith in your sovereign God who brought you to Him (and is certainly able and merciful to return your child as well). Jesus delights to bring prodigals back home to Himself. How many times in the course of our lives has the Lord Jesus returned us to Himself after we have fallen away (whether the fall was great or small)? It is no more difficult to return a prodigal than it is to prevent you from becoming a prodigal. Today, we hear the words of our glorious Savior and Lord whose heart cannot contain His passionate desire to enjoy that sweet communion that He once enjoyed with His beautiful bride. If ever you doubted that Jesus craves your return to Him (no matter how far or little you have fallen away—sometimes we don't think so much of the little because it has not been so public), you must cast all such doubts upon Jesus and embrace the truth which flows from His reassuring words in our text.
