Genesis is a turning point in Jacob's life. We find Jacob wrestling with God. God changes Jacob's name to Israel as symbolic of the change experienced by Jacob in his new life. Jacob is reconciled first to God and then to his brother, Esau. The fear of Esau drives him to prayer using God's own words back to God. Steadfast love and kindness is a characteristic of our unchanging God. Was Jacob Fearful or Faithful? God made objective promises to Jacob as he had to Abraham and Isaac. To change Jacob requires nothing less than a new birth indicated by the name change to Israel. After having been face-to-face with God, what do we have to fear? Our Camp Peniel is Jesus Christ and a change in our heart of stone to a heart of flesh. See II Cor 3:18
