This Psalm is one of personal testimony by David. It is one in which he repeatedly blesses the Lord for what He has done for David's soul.
The Psalm begins with a series of statements prefaced by the word bless'. It also concludes with a similar series.
In doing so he seeks to render praise and thanks unto the Lord for all that He has done for David. This is true for every believer. All praise and thanks belong to the Lord.
David is little more specific elsewhere as to exactly when he came to know the Lord, Psalm 71:5,6. In these verses he acknowledges two things: [1] God took him out of his mother's bowels and has holden him up from the womb ever since. This is the testimony of every child of God. [2] God brought him to 'hope' and 'trust' in God from his 'youth'.
In the Old Testament there are nine different stages of growth and development for a human being. These were readily understood by the Jews who native language Hebrew was.
These nine stages are generally outlined in the Old Testament by the use of nine different Hebrew words. The word 'youth' here is the 7th stage out of those 9. It refers to a young man old enough to be a soldier, cf. 1 Sam 17:33.
In this Psalm 103 David highlights some things worth considering from his testimony.
