'Paul is commissioning the church to just let this one go so that their flesh can be beaten down. Now God can beat down the flesh of one of His children in any kind of way. The sweet and gentle way that God beats down our flesh is by convicting us by the power of the Holy Spirit. If you can sit under the sound of the Gospel, yet maintain your lustful thoughts, if you can sit under the sound of the Gospel and maintain your ungodly practices, then the Spirit of God is not quickening the Word of God to your heart. That is a terrifying prospect, because what it means is that the Spirit of God is come this far and stopped in your life. He has sovereignly stopped to leave your where you are in your lust or in your evil practices. And that is a prerogative of God. He can draw a gulf wide or a gulf narrow between the human conscience and the human heart and His own Spirit, if He so chooses. He can even make you taste of the heavenly gift and of the good Word of God, yet withdraw His gracious presence and leave you in your flesh. If you can sit under the sound of the Gospel and not repent it ought to make you tremble before Almighty God. God could buffet your flesh another way. God could bring to bear horrible circumstantial burdens to chastise you. A Christian cannot get away with sin. If you can get away with sin, you're not a Christian. In Hebrews chapter twelve, the writer says, 'Whom the Lord loves, He chastens and scourges every son whom He receives.'
