All men want peace -- both internally and externally -- both subjective peace and objective peace. As fallen human beings, we all long for true peace.
Some are even willing to compromise truth for the sake of what they suppose to be peace. This is a mistake. Peace in the absence of truth is no real or lasting peace at all. Peace, if not centered in the truths of God, is nothing more than a truce -- an agreement for a time to mutually tolerate each other while you agree to accommodate one another's conditions.
Our passage provides a solid platform for genuine lasting peace both internally and externally. Paul is closing his letter to the Philippians and in doing so he wants us to make a firm stand in the eternal truths and principles that will afford us the peace that all mankind longs for -- 'the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension' (v7).
